Warsaw City Hall has summed up efforts to help refugees from Ukraine and has once again urged the government to come up with a support strategy. According to city mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, Warsaw has been still sheltering some 200,000 war refugees.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski thanked residents of Warsaw for helping refugees. "Our guest are here to stay with us and we need a strategy," he said.
He added that neither Poland, nor the European Union, had proposed any strategies in that regard.
Every fifth refugee stayed in Warsaw
"Since the beginning of the war, over 3.7 million people have entered Poland, every fifth one headed for Warsaw. More than 800,000 people from Ukraine have passed through Warsaw. In the peak of the crisis, approx. 300,000 people arrived in Warsaw," the mayor said.
"Therefore, just like we informed, in the first month the population of Warsaw increased by 15%," he added.
He mentioned, however, that the situation began to change in May. Some refugees have relocated to other places in Poland, while others have returned home. "We're trying to estimate these movements, to estimate the number of people who are in and around Warsaw at the moment. It appears that it is approx. 200,000 people. In Warsaw alone, it's approx. 170,000 people," Trzaskowski said.
14,000 volunteers
He also remined that the local government was not responsible for migration policy. "We've tried to do everything we can, but a huge majority of these tasks are extra duties," he said.
He also informed that 340,000 people received support at three reception points, operated by more 14,000 volunteer workers.
Furthermore, over 160,000 people have found shelter in more than 30 locations. Over 1,000 people were hospitalised, and more than 100 Ukrainian babies were born in Warsaw. More than 17,000 children refugees are learning in Warsaw schools.
Warsaw City Hall has already sent more than 5,000 boxes with food to Ukraine.
36% of refugees have already found jobs in Warsaw.
