In Trzebież Forest Inspectorate - located in northwestern Poland - demand for firewood is much higher than last year. Local foresters remind, however, the wood purchased this year will only be ready to use next year.
A forester from Poland's northwestern Trzebież Forestry Inspectorate tells TVN24 that firewood has been "selling like hot cakes" this year.
"Demand for firewood is higher than last year. The prices are more or less at the same level like last year, maybe slightly higher. We sell wood at foresters' lodges and forestry seats. Retail sale is carried out by foresters, whereas wholesale is done via an online auction system," says Tomasz Kulesza from Trzebież Forestry Inspectorate.
Firewood bought this year can be used only next year
Although the demand is soaring, forester remind that firewood sold by the State Forests is not seasoned, which means it should not be used this year, but only next year at the soonest.
Firewood becomes seasoned when it has been left out to dry for a long period of time, so the moisture from the tree’s cells and its sap have evaporated from the wood.
Properly dried wood will have an increased calorific value and won't produce a lot of smoke when burned.
Unfortunately, the supply of firewood in Poland is insufficient, and therefore, foresters suspect that some people will be burning freshly purchased wood already this year.
