Poland will support Ukraine's accession process to the European Union, the Polish foreign minister said on Monday, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday said he had signed an official request for Ukraine to join the bloc.
"Poland has always advocated Ukraine's EU membership. Today, when the Ukrainians heroically defend themselves against Russian aggression it's high time to welcome Ukraine into EU community. Poland will provide all necessary assistance to Ukraine's accession process. #FirstToHelp" - Zbigniew Rau wrote on Twitter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy informed on Monday he had signed an official request for Ukraine to join the European Union.
Zelenskiy has asked the European Union to allow Ukraine to gain membership immediately under a special procedure as it defends itself from invasion by Russian forces.
Russian artillery bombarded residential districts of Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv on Monday, killing possibly dozens of people, Ukrainian officials said, as Moscow's invading forces met stiff resistance from Ukrainians on a fifth day of conflict.
The attacks took place while Russian and Ukrainian officials met on the Belarusian border to discuss a ceasefire. The talks ended with no breakthrough.
