The Ministry of National Defence on Thursday (October 20) signed a leasing agreement on the MQ-9A Reaper unmanned reconnaissance drone system for the Polish Armed Forces. "We will be using it until we have acquired our own unmanned reconnaissance system," said the chief of the ministry Mariusz Błaszczak.
"Another investment in Poland's security. We have signed an agreement on leasing for the Polish Armed Forces the unmanned reconnaissance drone system MQ-9A REAPER," Mariusz Błaszczak wrote on Twitter.
He added it was a temporary solution. "We will be using it until we have acquired our own unmanned reconnaissance system," the defence minister said.
Polish Armed Forces said in a statement that the contract - between the Poland's Armaments Agency and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems - was worth 70.6 million dollars.
The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of remotely controlled or autonomous flight operations developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems primarily for the United States Air Force.
MQ-9s are one of the largest drones (wingspan of 20 metres) and are used for long-endurance and high-altitude surveillance, as well as for carrying out precision strikes with Hellfire missiles.
