The number of drownings in June is rising fast and authorities call upon the people to remain cautious by the water. Fifteen people died during the last weekend alone.
Six on Saturday, nine on Sunday, and 38 since the beginning of June. The last weekend was the most tragic this year. Jacek Kleczaj from WOPR Szczecin (Voluntary Water Rescue Service) lists the most common causes of drownings: rashness, recklessness, overestimating oneself, swimming in unguarded and prohibited areas, as well as substance abuse.
The causes have remained unchanged for years. Last year alone, 117 people who drowned had consumed alcohol beforehand.
"Alcohol gives us wings. It also affects our physiology. We cool down very quickly, our reactions slow down and we lose orientation" - the life guard said. "Besides, those who drowned usually thought they could swim. Those who know they can't swim, don't drown" - he added.
Apart from the sea, many people also drown in lakes and rivers - last years 111 and 118 respectively. "This is because many people spend holidays at the lakes and there are not many areas designated for swimming. Unlike at the seaside where there are guarded areas" - Kleczaj said.
"That's why the rescue service yet again appeals to keep caution by the water. "First and foremost, swim at guarded areas. That's why money is being spent, to set up those areas and secure safe leisure time" - said the chief of WOPR Szczecin. "Under no circumstances one should go into water after drinking. No matter if it's one or two beers, or God forbid, more than that" - he stressed.
