“U.S. President Donald Trump's visit is a great opportunity for the Polish economy,” said government spokesman Rafał Bochenek on Wednesday. He expressed the hope that the visit would not only strengthen Polish-American relations, but would also have an impact on EU's cooperation with the United States.
“It is worth noting that this will be a very important visit, as it will be in Warsaw that he (President Trump) will deliver his first European speech. In any case, the American administration itself has stressed that this is to be one of the more forceful and significant speeches delivered by President Donald Trump during his European visit,” Bochenek told reporters in the parliament.
“We believe this visit is a great opportunity for the Polish economy, for Polish entrepreneurs, as well as an opportunity to strengthen our relations, not only in the bilateral Polish-American context, but also in the context of economic relations between the European Union and the United States,” the government spokesman added.
PISM Experts: Trump's visit is a clear signal for U.S. business
PISM experts believe that the presence in Poland of the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of the Treasury – two officials with the greatest influence over U.S. economic policy – as members of Donald Trump's delegation will send a clear signal to U.S. business that Central Europe is a promising region.
Bartosz Wiśniewski, an expert at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, pointed out during a press conference on Wednesday that the delegation will include “the U.S. administration's economic team”: the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Treasury. “These two officials play the most important role in shaping the administration's economic policy,” he stressed.
In Wiśniewski's assessment, the fact that the Secretary of Commerce, who is second only to the Secretary of State in the administration's team responsible for shaping United States' foreign relations, will be present at the Three Seas Initiative summit sends a clear signal to American business that Central Europe is a promising region.
The Three Seas Initiative summit, which will be attended by representatives of 12 states, is taking place in parallel with President Trump's visit to Warsaw, and the U.S. President will meet the leaders of the Three Seas Initiative countries on Thursday.
Wiśniewski added that the United States is getting ready to enter the global LNG market, and that the aim of the Three Seas Initiative is to create an integrated gas market. However, in view of the composition of the delegation, the PISM expert does not expect a contract covering gas supplies to be signed during the visit. “President Trump is not accompanied by any business delegation,” he pointed out.
In his opinion, the highlight of the visit, from the U.S. point of view, will be Donald Trump's speech delivered on Krasiński Square. “This will be the speech that will set the tone for the rest of the President's European trip, and will certainly be followed in Berlin, Paris, Beijing and Moscow,” said Wiśniewski. After his visit to Warsaw, President Trump will leave on Thursday for Hamburg, where he will attend the G20 summit.
According to the expert, the speech will focus on U.S. policy towards Central and Eastern Europe; it has been announced as the first and most important strategic statement on foreign policy, made by the President of the United States outside his country. “The import of the speech will certainly go beyond bilateral relations,” stressed Wiśniewski.
