Flooding, hailstones and strong wind - that's what residents in many regions of Poland had to experience after a cold front passed across the country. In Pomerania, the firefighters intervened over 100 times. In Malbork, after heavy storm and hailstone downpour, many garages and basements were flooded. In Gdynia, a sidewalk and 100 metres of road collapsed at Janka Wiśniewskiego street.
Thursday was yet another stormy day in Poland. A cold weather front passed through the country. First and second-degree alerts were issued to warn against storms and hailstone downpour. The day before, Polish fire service carried out 388 severe-weather-related interventions.
Flooding and hailstones
"Due to the stormy weather front and heavy rainfall, we received over 70 calls from Malbork and its environs regarding flooded basements, garages and property. Some of the requests for help were called off as the water had receded," said robert Liczerski from Malbork Fire Service.
In Gdynia, a sidewalk and 100-metre-long fragment of the road collapsed at Janka Wiśniewskiego street. Fire service and police arrived at the scene. Initial findings suggested that the road had collapsed due to overload of the drainage system caused by the storm.
Heavy rain and evacuation in Lubelskie
Severe storm passed over borough of Modliborzyce in Lebelskie voivodeship. The water flooded some 100 buildings in three local villages, 18 people were evacuated. Some damage that was caused may take up to a few weeks to be repaired.
"Without help from good people, without their support, we won't make it," said the resident of Modliborzyce. "I didn't manage to even park my car in a safe place. It (the water) was some 20 centimetres from my the window," said another resident.
Artur Pizoń, the mayor of Janowski county, said "the most important thing is that no one had died". He stressed that there was damage done to infrastructure. "Sidewalk was eroded and we need to inspect some 6 kilometres of local roads, we need to check the state they are in," he said.
