Historian specialising in the history of Poland, Germany and Central-Eastern Europe, professor Włodzimierz Borodziej passed away at the age of 64. He was associated with the University of Warsaw Faculty of History since his student times.

"He was an esteemed historian, specialising in contemporary history of Poland, Germany and Central-Eastern Europe" - the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw said on its website.

Włodzimierz Borodziej was born in 1956. He graduated from the Institute of History at the University of Warsaw, where later he received his PhD and post-doctoral degree. He was associated with the Faculty of History since the 1970s. In 1996 he became associate professor, and 8 years later - in 2004 - professor. Between 1999 and 2002, prof. Borodziej served as prorector of the University of Warsaw. He also lectured as Gastprofessor at the Philipps University of Marburg and at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

He was also a chairman of the Academic Council of the House of European History in Brussels and co-director of the Imre Kertész Kolleg in Jena. Furthermore he was editor-in-chief of the "Polish Diplomatic Documents" series published by the Polish Institute of International Affairs.

Włodzimierz Borodziej's most important publications include "Terror and Politics. German Police and Polish Resistance Movement in the General Government 1939 - 1944", "The Warsaw Uprising 1944" and "The Round Table. Documents and materials".

The Max Weber Foundation awarded prof. Borodziej the International Research Award 2020. The award aims to recognize the achievements of those scholars whose work has made an exemplary contribution to international research in the fields of the humanities and social and cultural sciences.

He also received many awards, including Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse des Verdienstordens der Bundespreublik Deutschland (2002), Herder Preis (2006), Carl von Ossietzky Preis (2010), Medal of Commission of National Education (2012), Order of Rebirth of Poland (2014), Prime Minister’s Award (2015).

Prof. Borodziej died at the age of 64 after a long struggle with disease.
