Poland's Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said at a press conference on Wednesday the country has been experiencing a "pandemic explosion", but added there was no question of lockdown at that time.

Poland has seen an explosion of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two days and if the current trend continues drastic steps will be needed, the health minister said on Wednesday, after the country reported over 5,000 daily cases for the first time since May. "Over the last two days we have seen an explosion of the pandemic," Adam Niedzielski told a news conference, adding that next week daily cases could be "well above" 5,000.

Asked about what he had in mind by drastic steps, he said it would mean returning to the situation from a year ago, when everyone wore masks and followed sanitary rules.

He also ruled out introducing lockdowns for the time being.

Poland's Health Ministry reported 5,559 new cases of the coronavirus and 75 deaths on Wednesday.

The 5,559 new infections reported on Wednesday is the highest daily number since May 7. Last week on Wednesday, the ministry informed about 2,640 new cases, so in a week-to-week comparison, it is an increase by 110 percent.

The average number of infection for the last 7 days has increased up to 3,222 and is the highest since May 15.

Compared to the previous day, the weekly average has gone up by more than 400 cases, which the highest spike since April 14.

The number of active cases, that is the number of people currently fighting infections, amounted to 195,939 and is the highest since May 8.

The ministry also said on Wednesday that further 75 people died do to COVID-19, which was the highest mortality report since June 10.

The average number of COVID-19 deaths, based on the last 7 days, has gone up to 42 and is at its highest since June 16.

Since the start of the pandemic, Poland has reported 2,950,616 infection cases and 76,254 COVID-related deaths.
