"A prominent symbol of Jewish resistance". Diplomats and ambassadors pay tribute to Warsaw Ghetto Heroes
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising broke out exactly 78 years ago, on April 19, 1943. To mark the anniversary, foreign diplomats stationed in Poland paid their respects to the fallen heroes. "We remember those who had the courage to oppose tyranny and who put everything on the line, knowing that the chances for freedom were slim" - Chargé d'Affaires in the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw Bix Aliu wrote in a statement.
78 years ago an uprising broke out in the Warsaw Ghetto. It was the biggest act of resistance of Jews during the Second World War, as well as the first city rising in German-occupied Europe.
Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich stressed on Monday that "despite the passage of time and civilisational changes we must not forget about what happened at that time, about people who perished, who were murdered". "The testimony of their lives teaches us that there are such values in life, like freedom or human dignity, which must be fought for until the end, to the last breath" - he said.
The chief of the Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. "The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is considered to be a prominent symbol of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. It was only years after the uprising that the courage and sacrifice of the Jewish fighters in the ghetto were properly appreciated" - the statement reads.
A photo of Israeli foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi was attached to the statement in which he informed that "The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Israel and Poland, Gabi Ashkenazi and Zbigniew Rau, together with the ambassadors of Israel and Poland across the world, have joined the 'Yellow Daffodil' campaign commemorating the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began on 19 April 1943".
The anniversary was also marked by foreign ambassadors to Poland.
Chargé d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw Bix Aliu wrote on Twitter that on today's anniversary "we remember those who had the courage to oppose tyranny and who put everything on the line, knowing that the chances for freedom were slim. Their determination and tremendous courage will never be forgotten". Aliu also attached a photo of himself with a yellow daffodil pinned to his chest.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Andrii Deshchytsia posted a short comment, also with a daffodil, in which he reminds of the date of the uprising. "Remember!" - he wrote.
Spanish diplomats also posted photos with daffodils. "The Spanish Embassy in Poland pays tribute to thousands of victims of those events on the 78th anniversary of the rising" - they wrote in a tweet.
German Ambassador to Poland Arndt Freytag von Loringhoven wrote on Twitter that, in order to mark the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, flags at the embassy have been lowered at half mast.
"We bow our heads to all victims and to brave insurgents. German blame and responsibility shall remain forever" - he wrote.
